Monofilaments
THE PROBLEM
Casting out a line and reeling in a fish is the favorite activity of many anglers. However, many of the fishing lines require monofilament made from plastic material. When these lines break, they pose a great threat to many marine plants and animals. If discarded on land, monofilament fishing lines may entangle birds due to their resemblance to food or construction material often used for creating nests. Once the lines reach the ocean, they can cause entanglement, strangulation, and the death of marine wildlife.
PAST WORK:
For the conservation of marine life, Seaside Sustainability strives to make recreational fishing a more sustainable activity. To achieve this, we placed small collection receptacles for fishing lines on piers and docks around the city of Gloucester, MA, thanks to the generous donations from the Building Center in Gloucester. The collected lines were sent to be recycled and turned into other plastic products.
Seaside sustainability also seeks to connect locals to their environment by casting light on the heavy costs of environmental degradation and providing resources to participate in solutions. The monofilament disposal tubes fulfilled this mission by encouraging recreational fishing in Cape Ann and providing a place to safely dispose of monofilament fishing line.
