Meet Seaside Sustainability's Board of Directors: Alan McCoy

Written by: Grace Girzadas

Meet Alan McCoy, a retired educator from Essex, MA. Alan worked in education for 35 years as a history teacher, coach, and athletic director. He then became a school sustainability leader, working on initiatives such as food waste, plastic use, energy consumption, and recycling. Alan was also the faculty sponsor of the Pingree Community Garden Club, which ultimately led to the creation of the Pingree Learning Gardens.

Alan’s relationship with Executive Director Eric Magers began years before the organization was formed. At the time they met, Eric was an ultimate frisbee coach. Alan recalls admiring Eric’s leadership and the way he was able to connect with the students on his team. Eric was soon brought on as a sustainability consultant at Alan’s school, and later Alan joined the Seaside Sustainability team.

Alan emphasized that one of his favorite parts of the organization is the intern program because it provides an exceptional platform for young people interested in sustainability and non-profits.

In his role as the Chairperson of the Board, his goal is to build on the inspiring vision of Seaside Sustainability by enhancing the organization’s infrastructure. He believes that  creating a strategic plan to guide the next 3-5 years will be essential for purposeful growth.

In closing, Alan emphasized that he is blown away by the wonderful people who are putting their time and energy into helping Seaside grow and flourish.

Thank you for all that you do for Seaside, Alan!
