MARINE SCIENCE & EDUCATION

Protecting our coastal waterways through education and action

What We Do

It all begins with a thought. The Marine
Science & Education team is dedicated to
turning thoughts into action by focusing on the first step to change: education. By informing the next generation of the ways in which our environment is hurting and how we can help, our team inspires students to leave the classroom and put into practice what they now know.

The Blue Technology subteam is purposed with promoting “Blue technology” (i.e., marine debris intervention devices that, unlike other devices, are not harmful to the marine ecosystem) by creating and maintaining meaningful partnerships.
We connect with various organizations that are invested in the idea of sustainable marine debris intervention and ocean purification.

The grants and scholarships subteam is in charge of creating grant proposals that convey Seaside's mission and previous work. The funding generated by our grants and scholarships team is essential for all the different projects that are happening here at Seaside.

We Take Action

Our educational initiatives take place in and outside of the classroom. Our members of the Marine Science & Technology team are provided with the opportunity for hands-on experience. From facilitating the implementation and operation of cutting-edge blue technology across the nation to the organization of local beach cleanups, we act with the big picture in mind by becoming involved in our community.

We Like To Keep It Local

As champions of community involvement, Seaside Sustainability offers opportunities to connect and make an impact in its Massachusetts home Cape Ann.

alike. Seaside has undertaken many projects related to plastic mitigation, highlighted here is our Great Marsh microplastics report and our Single Use Consumer Plastic Ban Guide.

Seaside’s Marine Science team is working to implement safe and sustainable marine trawling that follows NOAA’s protocol. Trawling can help clean up debris that has sunk to the ocean floor.

The CGBG is a revision to the Massachusetts Clean Marina Guide. It outlines how to be a sustainable boat owner and consumer of products related to boating. Our publication seeks to provide up to date information, widen the guide’s target audience, and to make it more accessible to different communities.

Rising tides bring unwanted litter to our beaches so about 10 times during the year we give our coast a
much needed clean-up.

The Marine Debris Action Plan (MDAP) aims to reduce the impacts of marine debris in the Gulf of Maine by increasing understanding of the problem, taking preventative actions, and collaborating with diverse partners on solutions.

Blue technologies are marine debris intervention devices that will help remove waste from our oceans, beaches, and waterways. These innovative devices and systems are designed to monitor and clean our oceans without harming marine
ecosystems.
