MARINE SCIENCE & EDUCATION

Passionately creating sustainable oceans & communities by educating through action

Marine Science & Education - We take action through in-person and virtual scientific educational opportunities to help create a sustainable and clean future.

What We Do

It all begins with a thought. The Marine Science & Education department is dedicated to turning thoughts into action by focusing on the first step to change: education. By informing the next generation of the ways in which our environment is hurting and how we can help, we inspire students to leave the classroom and put into practice what they now know.

It all begins with a thought. The Marine Science & Education subteam is dedicated to turning thoughts into action by focusing on the first step to change: education. By informing the next generation of the ways in which our environment is hurting and how we can help, our team inspires students to leave the classroom and put into practice what they now know.

The Blue Technology subteam is purposed with promoting “Blue technology” (i.e., marine debris intervention devices that, unlike other devices, are not harmful to the marine ecosystem) by creating and maintaining meaningful partnerships.
We connect with various organizations that are invested in the idea of sustainable marine debris intervention and ocean purification.

The grants and scholarships subteam is in charge of creating grant proposals that convey Seaside's mission and previous work. The funding generated by our grants and scholarships team is essential for all the different projects that are happening here at Seaside.

We Take Action

Our educational initiatives take place in and outside of the classroom. Our members of Marine Science & Education are provided with the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals who strive to provide marine science education across the world. From informing about the implementation and operation of cutting-edge blue technology across the nation to the organization of local beach cleanups, we act with the big picture in mind by becoming involved in our community.

Marine Science & Education Projects

As champions of community involvement, Seaside Sustainability offers opportunities to connect and make an impact in its Massachusetts' home, Cape Ann. Continue reading to learn about the projects we are involved in.

We have partnered with Keep Massachusetts Beautiful to create the Clean Coast Coalition, to address the marine debris problem along New England coastlines through action and education.

Learn about dates and locations for our cleanups, sign up to volunteer, or schedule a private cleanup for your group!

Seaside Sustainability is excited to be spearheading the Chebacco Lake Coalition working towards the restoration of Chebacco Lake and the surrounding watershed.

Join us in our mission to SEA change by getting involved first hand in our numerous projects in the Gloucester, MA area.

Seaside Sustainability’s Marine Science & Education department is working to implement safe and sustainable marine trawling that follows NOAA’s protocol. Learn about how trawling can help clean up debris that has sunk to the ocean floor.

The Clean and Green Boater’s Guide outlines how to be a sustainable boat owner and consumer of boating products. Our publication seeks to provide up to date information that is accessible to boaters and marina communities.

Seaside Sustainability has undertaken many projects related to plastic mitigation, including our Great Marsh microplastics report and our Single Use Consumer Plastic Ban Guide.

Rising tides bring unwanted litter to our beaches so about 10 times during the year we give our coast a
much needed clean-up.

The Marine Debris Action Plan (MDAP) aims to reduce the impacts of marine debris in the Gulf of Maine by increasing understanding of the problem, taking preventative actions, and collaborating with diverse partners on solutions.

Blue technologies are marine debris intervention devices that will help remove waste from our oceans, beaches, and waterways. These innovative devices and systems are designed to monitor and clean our oceans without harming marine
ecosystems.
