Sunscreen Dispensers
Sunscreen plays a vital role in protecting human health from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Consistent application of sunscreen is critical when exposed to sunlight, as it reduces the likelihood of developing skin cancers, like melanoma. However, while sunscreen is beneficial for skin protection, some products contain harmful chemicals that can be harmful to the environment. Ingredients such as oxybenzone and octinoxate can cause coral bleaching and impair the health and reproduction of marine organisms.
The Importance of reef-safe Sun Screens
When purchasing sunscreen, it is important to avoid harmful ingredients, including zinc oxide nanoparticles, 4-methylbenzylidene, octocrylene, methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, benzyl paraben, and triclosan. Reef-safe sunscreens, which do not contain these harmful substances, have been made more readily available.

Recent initiatives at Good Harbor beach
The first week of July 2024, two sunscreen dispensers were installed at Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester, MA. Dispensers are located on either side of the food and bathroom building mounted to the walls.
Seaside Sustainability is partnering with Raw Elements, a company that produces natural and reef-safe sunscreen products. Our intern and volunteer teams are monitoring the status of these dispensers and are hoping to produce a video featuring conducted interviews with beach visitors using this sunscreen in the future. These interviews will allow Seaside Sustainability to get feedback on the dispensers themselves as well as educate the public about the importance of utilizing reef-safe sunscreen and the harmful impacts chemicals from consumer products can have on the marine environment
Aiming for a sustainable beach experience
The ultimate goal of this sunscreen project is to expand the presence of these dispensers across Gloucester and other Cape Ann beaches.

By promoting the use of reef-safe sunscreens, this initiative seeks to protect both human health and the marine environment, fostering a sustainable relationship between beachgoers and nature .
