MARINE SHRINK WRAP RECYCLING

Taking initiative to preserve and protect the marine environment

THE PROBLEM

Each year, boat owners and marinas discard hundreds of tons of shrink wrap, a plastic made from polyethylene that doesn’t biodegrade. Instead of breaking down, it remains in landfills indefinitely, occupying space and contributing to environmental pollution. This is an unsustainable practice that needs to change.

PROGRAM MISSION

The Seaside Sustainability Marine Science and Education team is proud to bring back a program aimed at helping boaters preserve and protect our oceans. As part of our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, we are introducing a convenient shrink wrap recycling program designed to reduce the impact of boat shrink wrap on marine ecosystems. Each year, thousands of tons of shrink wrap cover boats during the off-season, often ending up in landfills or polluting our waterways. Our program offers a sustainable solution by providing boaters with a safe and easy way to recycle their shrink wrap, diverting this material from landfills and keeping it out of the marine environment. By participating in this program, boat owners can help reduce plastic waste, protect marine life, and contribute to the overall health of our coastal ecosystems. Together, we can make a difference in preserving the beauty and vitality of our oceans for future generations. For more information on how to participate in our Shrink Wrap Recycling Program contact our team today!

OUR SOLUTION

Recycle with us! Seaside Sustainability has created a shrink wrap recycling program for Cape Ann, providing marinas and boat owners with a free, eco-friendly option for disposing of their shrink wrap. Seaside Sustainability’s mission is to protect the planet's oceans, seas, wetlands, and estuaries by addressing the critical issues that threaten our environment. One way to make a difference is to divert as much plastic as possible from landfills, which is why we are thrilled to announce our shrink wrap recycling program.

How does it work?

Thanks to our supportive sponsors Linda Rowe and everyone from the Goodies Fund, Seaside Sustainability is able to bring recycling bins to the Cape Ann area so boaters can bring their shrink wrap to be recycled. The bins are accessible to the public during normal business hours throughout the week and the program is free and open to boat owners everywhere, no marina membership required.  This program will run annually in Gloucester from April to June at Gloucester DPW, with plans to expand to other Cape Ann cities in the future. The plastic has to be free of foreign material (dirt, sand, trash, wooden supports, plastic vents) and rolled neatly before being placed in the dumpster bins. We at Seaside Sustainability are committed to sustainability and diverting waste from landfills and excited to offer this free program to our community.
